"The formulation of the gathering catastrophe is simple. Coronavirus is loose in China. The Chinese Communist Party has declared war upon it and must win lest it jeopardizes itself. As the virus explodes, the base case for that is now to progressively shut the country down for six-to-nine months. There is still an upside risk case that the CCP succeeds in choking the virus sooner, or a miracle drug appears, but with each passing day, material economic harm well beyond SARS is being done to China. And there is an even higher probability risk case that the CCP fails and the world succumbs to a pandemic unseen since the Spanish Flu of 1918."

"Even before the Coronavirus surfaced in China there was lower manufacturing factory activity within the Chinese economy.  The necessary response within China to control the spread of the Coronavirus has been to shut down most commerce.  Factories, schools &  businesses throughout China are empty as various containment measures are underway."

And in my opinion, I believe people should harbor a skeptical opinion of anything that comes out of the Chinese government. So, what data am I looking at to try and verify or contradict China's claims? I'm watching the fatality rate outside of China. As of right now, the fatality rate of about 2% (NY Times says "less than 3%"), according to China's numbers, is often cited as a reason not to worry about the virus. Let us first remember that the normal flu has a fatality rate of about 0.4%, which makes the Wuhan coronavirus far more lethal. It also spreads quicker. "

Thailand has reportedly seen promising results after treating a coronavirus patient with a mix of two antiviral drugs which are usually used to treat HIV. Medics tested the drug mix on a patient who was in a 'serious condition' with the disease and within 48 hours they were declared disease-free, reports Bloomberg. The drugs, originally used for HIV and influenza treatment, were a success according to a medical briefing given by Dr Kriangsak Attipornwanich. 

This was tested on one patient so it is much too early to declare victory. The drugs were two protease inhibitors and one flu antiviral.
